Solar Traveller

Plans are underway for the design and development of a new improved Solar Traveller II, a mobile PV power station with interactive engagement components for educational outreach activities to throughout Iowa. In July 2012, we received a $5,000 grant from the Leighty Foundation toward this project and in 2013, those funds will be matched by RJ Construction to support the project to completion in 2013.  We aim to reveal our new power station at our 2013 EXPO!

Throughout much of 2012 we partnered with Iowa Solar Small Wind Trade Association (ISETA) to take ISETA’s solar trailer on the road. Venues included Green Day during the Cedar Rapids Farmers Market in July; Ragbrai 2012; and in October and November we hit the road to Cedar Falls, Des Moines, and Muscatine to meet with Iowa’s faith-based communities, on the Iowa Faith Energized Tour, all demonstrating the power of the sun!

In partnership with Iowa Public Interest Research Group (IPIRG), Iowa Interfaith Power and Light (IIP&L) and Iowa Solar Small Wind Trade Association (ISETA) the interactive sessions not only covered the basics of solar electric technology, but also detailed the costs of solar and state and federal incentives that make NOW a great time for an investment in solar energy systems. As our tour drew to a close in December 2012, we were able to power LED Christmas lights, play festive music and serve attendees hot cider, all powered by the solar traveller.

Please contact IRENEW if you are interested in making a donation toward this valuable educational tool. Also, please keep up with our calendar of events as we plan to hold several workshops in tandem with the build-out of the Solar Traveller II during the spring of 2013!
